Exercise: Developing Your Confidence
Choose and outdoor situation where there will be lots of people and activity, and in which you will feel confident using your camera.
Make as many images as you comfortably can in one session. When you review the images afterwards, recall the comfort level you felt at the time and consider to what extent this helped you in capturing expressions and gesture.
I decided to take the opportunity of a study visit to a gallery in London to make the images for this exercise where I could guarantee to find a very busy site. Victoria station was very close to the bus station I was using and so I went there at the peak-time period in the late afternoon and shot one hundred and thirty-four images of passers-by. I used an 18 – 55mm zoom lens and ISO 400.
I must admit to feeling very uncomfortable when I started this exercise but as it went along it became easier, although when any subject noticed me with my camera in position it did become uncomfortable, but actually I was only challenged once by someone I think was an illegal immigrant, so no wonder really.
